Last Saturday (7th) I bought a ticket for "A Day with Ricky Tims" on 4th April at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Oldham, from Philomena Langford at Patchwork Parade. Costs £37 plus £3 postage (must be a heavy ticket as it only costs $3 for small package sent from Australia!)

As I am in no fit state to drive from home in the northwest to Oldham I attempted to book train journey only to discover Oldham no longer has a station.

Reluctantly (cos I would love to see Ricky) contacted Philomena for refund (under the circumstances) but as she is unable to do so suggests I travel by train to Manchester and then change to a no.59 bus which involves a further hour's journey to Oldham. Not happy about this. In my present condition it's impossible. Any suggestions?

I wonder if anyone out there would like to spend a day with Ricky and purchase my ticket?

Not sure the best way to do it but if you telephone Philomena at 0161 633 5900 I'm sure she will be able to help you. I haven't received the ticket as yet.

Ricky Tims - and a robin for Christmas!

Was given this little knitted robin for Christmas - didn't know what to say . . . overwhelmed!

Also given a wonderful "Grand Finale" DVD by Ricky Tims. I suggest you buy it. He is a brilliant teacher - gives clear instructions and is a mine of information. As I have lots of unquilted tops waiting . . . . . . . waiting . . . . . will certainly use some of his techniques - especially the way he binds his quilts. Beautiful.

This is the best Christmas present ever and I have sat and watched it 3 times already.

Relaxing with cups of tea and warm mince pies. Bliss!

Off to my brother's house to celebrate the New Year, but I shall drive back afterwards. I never was one for alcohol but stopped drinking completely after seeing how it affected Stephen.

Feel all the better for it.

Generous Jan (Jans Musing) has finally finished her beautiful version of Pop Patchwork magazine Singing Garden quilt and given me a mention as original designer, for which I thank her.

The finished quilt has not previously been seen on-line - only in it's bare state to meet the magazine deadline. No quilting or binding. So here it is - complete and finally on a bed.

I do like Jan's lovely version and her use of a restricted colour palette.

I was given a brief (and fabrics) to present a different and colourful block each month for a year.

Made Autumn and Winter versions too - which I prefer - but they are waiting to be quilted . .

alongside another 6 waiting in the wings . . . . !!

Was ready to chuck the machine out of the window . . . could not prevent the pedal running away with me. OK for a tippy toed - light footed fairy, but pedal too responsive to my size 6 (UK) foot. Tensions all wrong.

Didn't have this problem with my old Bernina.

BUT - the Juki has a large 'harp' which makes it a doddle to work on a bed-size quilt.

Offered the machine up for sale.

Only Angie Whiston from Staffs (www.angiequilts.blogspot.com) - and Maureen Lamb (www.quiltworks.co.uk) from Cumbria - saved the machine by encouraging me to persevere and offered some very helpful tips.

Left the machine for a few days before trying again.

Found this a bit tricky - ended up using 2 telephone directories to ease pressure off foot.

This is one speedy machine and can run away with you. Using the directories enabled me to slow the machine down.

There is a thread cutter on the pedal (red bit) which I disconnected. Idea sounds wonderful but I found it easer to use the scissor button on the body of the machine - less liable to to cut threads by hitting the red button by mistake. Fine for a very experienced professional machinist - which I am not.

Brilliant - cuts top and bottom thread - saves a lot of messing . .

Presencia (as recommended by Angie). Good.

Sylko mercerised cotton 50wt.

Aurifil 50/2 thread. Good.

Madeira Polyneon #40 thread. Very nice result.

Invisafil #100 was quite good.

Madeira machine embroidery thread was OK.

Bottom Line #60 wt was OK.

Had a chance to visit Kelmscott Manor in Glos - just a few miles from my daughter in Cirencester. William Morris (and that rascal Rossetti) leased the manor for a few years.

Rossetti was having an affair with Jane Morris - William left them to it - went off to Iceland. Meanwhile Rossetti left Kelmscott (and Jane) and William finally bought the manor. It became William and Jane's favourite place. William was inspired by Kelmscott and many of his designs reflect this. Stephen was very much like William Morris.

A basic attitude towards life - fiercely independent - an artist - creative - outspoken. He even resembled Morris - and was bearded. One photograph of Morris in his bedroom at Kelmscott caught me off guard as he looked so much like Stephen. Beverley pointed out the resemblance. Had to sit down for a moment.

This quilt was made in his memory. Adapted from Michele Hill design. I enjoyed making it - wept a few times during the process. The Juki machine (with its large 'harp' and single stitch) was bought specifically to quilt it - plus - eventually - 9 other quilt tops!

Was buying groceries -veggies - from Lidl and picked up a bottle of their new Madame Glamour (name puts you off) perfume everyone is raving about. Apparently beat Dior and others in blind testing.

Thought it will do as an everyday fragrance - cheap. First impression was of lavatory cleaner - but it mellowed and was not bad. Sprayed myself liberally and limped to library and covered market.

Was stopped twice by women saying how nice I smelled and what was my perfume? It's Dior something or other said one lady. 'I buy that - but it's so expensive at £80 a bottle. Yours is a bit different - but LOVELY! Bet it's expensive.' Yes, it is rather. Lidl - £3.99 a bottle!!!

Lasts a long time too - unlike my usual Clarins Sunshine perfume - which is nice and fresh - but soon disappears.

A case of DIY

As my back problem is something I have to live with - unless my bottom or legs go numb - in which case an op will be performed ASAP - it's a case of DIY treatment.

So . . . have made an appointment with physio for some traction - contacted my ex pilates tutor to see if she can help and instead of counselling I've been having at Cancercare - asked for massage sessions instead.

Decided I must do something about my pale washed-out face. Invested in two wash-off 'home tan' products. See above. Guerlain Teint d'ailleurs 02 - made me look like a red Indian (apologies to American Indians - lived in Oklahoma and good friends with a couple - who would understand!) Should have ordered 01. The Becca - Tobacco (colour not flavour) did similar. However, mixed with some pale foundation and moisturiser - look less red Indian - more of a Strictly Come Dancing star!

This is useful FREE information for you.

Operation on 11th cancelled last minute due to emergency that had arisen at hospital. Sent home.

Re set for Saturday 15th October.

Prepped and ready to go - elastic stockings - paper panties et al. when - after examination and much discussion with anaesthetist and neuro-surgeon - it was decided the risks outweighed the benefits at this present time. Sent home once more. Feel quite depressed as had banked on the operation curing all my back problems. Am back to square one with backache and still shuffling about.

FOR SALE: JUKI TL 98P sewing machine. Purchased 10 days ago. Cannot use it due to back problems. Any Offers?

At Last . . .

At long last. Operation - spinal decompression - set for 11th October. Operated on by best neurosurgeon in northwest UK so not feeling too worried about the outcome.

Scary problems/complications arising from the op have been explained - but they have to do that don't they?

Any advice re above op would be appreciated, especially if anyone out there has had this particular operation. Must confess I am a bit concerned about aftercare given that Stephen died last year and I have no helpful family nearby.

Will throw myself on social services and see what they can offer.

I will be glad to see the back of the last 2+ years - which have been ghastly.

Just hope this operation will be successful and I am able to get back into normal living once more.

Life can be bloody sometimes . . .

My life, since Steve died, seems to have been jinxed.

His death was bad enough not to mention the burglary a few weeks later. This was followed by my collapse in the garden - being rushed by ambulance to local hospital and Coronary Care.

It wasn't my heart - merely grief, stress and overdoing things.

A lovely mature (35 year old) quince tree was uprooted a few months later in a storm, and a superb old (40 year) Cotoneaster tree died earlier this year - used to call it the Bird Tree 'cos that's where they perched.

The prettiest tree in the garden also died - a mature Pseudo Acacia Frisia - both this and the Cotoneaster apparently affected by the bad winter. Losing three trees within a few months has completely changed the garden and upset me no end.

I was overwhelmed by the tasks facing me but worked non-stop. Have to paddle one's own canoe. Developed severe pain in my back and could only sit for short periods. Saw a nurse practitioner (busy surgery - no doctors available) in April. Nurse diagnosed sciatica and prescribed Codipar etc.,

Assumed it was something I would have to live with - continued to work albeit very slowly and painfully, but my back problem worsened. Had to drag myself about and could not walk properly - only shuffle. As indeed I still do. Having headaches and attacks of vertigo these past 3 weeks.

Saw GP in May who thought I should see a neurologist and have urgent MRI scan. Received an appointment 3 weeks later and to my surprise was seen by a nurse practitioner in pain management department - not a Consultant neurologist as I was led to believe. She did however arrange for an immediate MRI scan which revealed bulging disc problems (spinal stenosis) and after some argy bargy with orthopaedic department at local hospital - have finally been referred to a neurosurgeon - as opposed to an orthopaedic surgeon - now have an appointment on 15th August.

The pain and lack of mobility has depressed me - with increasing feelings of distress and loss - feel I am disintegrating.

I discourage visitors as most leave me feeling worse. Find myself having to sit and listen to their own much worse tales of woe or how their uncle's wife's best friend has lost an arm and a leg, or a third cousin four times removed has died, or some such tragedy. I do my best to be sympathetic but feel lousy, and guilty at mentioning my own problems.

Reminds me of the Monty Python sketch where each tries to outdo the other in misery.

Stephen was diagnosed with stomach cancer in summer of 2008 but thought he had years to live. Carried on as normal. Told it had spread to his liver in November 2008 but was operable. Had chemo in January 2009. Had a stroke. Cancer kicked in with a vengeance - discovered primary site of bowel cancer. Inoperable and terminal. I set aside my life and looked after him, as you know.

Although it was hard, at least there was purpose to my life.

Was offered a full-time place at Art College in 2009. It was Stephen's suggestion.

I felt it would give me some purpose and encourage me to get out of bed after his death.

It was deferred until September 2011. I'm praying they will defer it again until 2012, providing I am physically able to cope with the work after my op, otherwise there is little or no purpose to my life.

Am starting to pick myself up and face life again, having lived like a hermit for past 14 months.

Tough Times

The past few months have been rough. Although expected, the shock, and manner, of Stephen's death sent me into a downward spiral. I tried to assuage my grief by working overtime in the garden - lugging large bags of compost - to a point of exhaustion which I thought might help me sleep - but I collapsed and ended up in an ambulance, sirens blaring, to spend a couple of days in the Coronary Care Unit at the local hospital.

I find moments come out of the blue when I relive some of the horrors of the past year, remembering Stephen's pain and desperate physical condition during the last few weeks of his life. An appalling way to die.

I found solace in mindless knitting - something I hadn't done for 30 years. Am about to finish 9th jumper since Stephen was admitted to the Hospice. Same pattern - different wools. Will be able to knit my tenth - blindfolded.

Have discouraged visitors and not been out - apart from the local shop.

However, 3 weeks ago discovered my lovely engagement ring, Stephen's heavy gold signet ring and cash was missing - as was the kitchen door key.

Had been burgled. Entry had been forced by means of a tiny conservatory window and inner mesh frame (to keep out flies) had been broken. Police were called and forensics took fingerprints.

Spent miserable days and scary nights - listening for sounds of intruders - imagination working overtime.

The local police were marvellous. Supportive and reassuring. After 9 days was informed the burglar had been caught (forensics - he had previous form) and confessed to the crime. My engagement ring was found - sold by an accomplice to a small jeweller's shop in the city (no questions asked for £450 cash.) Cost £2000 many years ago.

Was a relief to have my ring returned, but the experience, on top of everything else, has depressed me to say the least and reinforced my loss of Stephen.

Am so tired, having been to the Hospice this evening for a memorial service for families to remember patients who died there between March and May this year, and light a candle in their memory.

Was alone. Couldn't handle it - burst into tears and walked out before the service proper had begun. All the trauma and upset over the weeks - and year - have taken their toll.

I am lonely and devastated.

Stephen died at 11.10am on Saturday 13th March.

Stephen spent a very painful final week in the hospice. It was distressing to watch and a relief when he died.

The funeral is to be held on Monday 22nd March at 2pm.

MIRACLE at the HOSPICE.

We thought Stephen was dying when admitted to the hospice a week ago. The family gathered together over the weekend thinking it would be the last time they saw him.

I was distressed in the extreme and howled as I walked into my empty house - thinking 'this is it!'

However, much to everyone's surprise Stephen rallied, and by Wednesday was sitting in an armchair - watching the football match between ENGLAND and EYGPT - reading the newspaper - and making detailed drawings of his cancers between times.

He was, after all, an art teacher before his retirement.

Stephen is still obviously very ill, but the doctors are amazed at his tenacity and strong will to survive!

This may well be a case of 'the last rose of summer' before the fall - as his right foot is still very badly infected and dripping lymphatic fluid - but the fluid on his swollen stomach, legs and fluid-filled scrotum has lessened thanks in main to the wonderful nursing at the hospice and the ministrations of the resident oedema specialist. He is comfortable and not feeling any pain, which is a mercy as he was carried to the ambulance screaming in agony whenever anything touched him.

It is 4.30 am and I am unable to sleep.

Stephen was taken by ambulance to S John's Hospice yesterday afternoon, his condition having deteriorated to such point where it was impossible for him to be nursed at home.

He looked peaceful when I saw him last night, but it is obvious that his life is now drawing to a close.

It tolls for me! Have placed my old school bell next to Stephen's bed so he can ring when he needs me.

Doctor called yesterday morning - to check the infection in Stephen's foot - prescribed antibiotics. Apparently it is dangerous if the infection gets under the skin - spreads to his legs - could set up diabetes. The oedema has now spread up the legs to his stomach, which is vastly distended. He is also experienced pain for the first time when doctor gently pressed the liver.

Doctor took me aside - explained the situation and what to expect over the next week or two (not months). Discussed end-of-life care and whether I could cope with him at home over the following weeks. A special pack is to be ordered - to be kept at home for the medics to use as Stephen deteriorates, when he may, or may not - depending on how he feels - be transferred to the Hospice.

Stephen remained in bed all day - ringing the bell, as necessary.

However, in the evening, as I was sitting trying to relax - doing a bit of mindless knitting and watching women giving birth on TV (will opt for a caesarian next time) - the bell rang furiously. I panicked - ran upstairs to find a very cheerful Stephen sitting up in bed doing the Times crossword and requesting a second glass of Wisniowka (Polish cherry vodka to the uniniated).

I think you could say we are on a rollercoaster!

Another grim day . . .

Another grim day. Stephen has an infection in his foot, which looks nasty and could spread to his leg if not treated. Parts of his legs are weeping already. Chiropodist coming at tea-time.

Oedema nurse arrived this afternoon - not much she could do - apart from showing me how to massage his legs. Says it is due to problems much higher up. She is going to see Stephen again on Thursday at the Hospice when we see Professor MB and the hospice team, including social services, for a complete review of Stephen's situation.

My chiropodist phoned whilst nurse was here - so it was useful for them to have an exchange re possible medication and treatment for Stephen's foot.

The chiropodist is super. Highly qualified and the best in the town if not the county. I've been treated by a few chiropodist/podiatrists but NB beats them all. She dressed his foot - said it was a bacterial infection and asked me to call the GP for a prescription, but Doctor said he wanted to see Stephen himself and will call here tomorrow. For which I'm thankful.

Stephen has spent an uncomfortable day - angry and stressed - made worse by collapsing in a heap on the stairs this evening. We spent an hour struggling to get him up the stairs - out of breath with every step he took. We are supposed to be having a stairlift installed - so I will be ringing the firm in the morning to get them moving. We can't go on like this.

Stephen was extremely distressed and weepy when I finally got him into his bed.

Morphine will help him sleep for a few hours.

NB: I trust any heavy smokers or drinkers out there are taking heed of this situation.

A terrible weekend. Oedema nurse did not turn up. Phoned at 5.3o pm Friday evening to apologise. Hopes to call tomorrow. Meanwhile it's a case of DIY, legs up and home massage.

Weekends are not the time to be ill or needy.

Have arranged for my chiropodist to visit and attend to Stephen's swollen feet tomorrow evening in the hope it will make them more comfortable. He cannot wear shoes now - only soft granny slippers with velcro fastenings, which he hates.

Stephen was very angry and bitter this weekend - and as I am the only one here - got full blast of his feelings. It is not easy being on the receiving end of such ranting and I am becoming exhausted. Stephen can no longer walk properly and he either remains in bed or sits in an armchair whilst I run around like a scalded cockerel seeing to all his needs - not to mention cooking and housework.

He has now become quite demanding with everything and everyone. Is determined to survive. Seems a dreadful thing to say but, having given 13 months of my life to his constant care, I am afraid that my own health may be compromised which will do neither of us any good.

Stephen had a bad day yesterday, followed by a very bad night.

Our local pharmacist turned up on the doorstep during the evening - with morphine - prescribed by our GP and faxed to the pharmacy. There's not many who would take the trouble to do that and we were especially grateful for his thoughtfulness. The medicine proved invaluable during the night.

Stephen had difficulty moving this morning - so remained in bed for the whole day and slept most of the time.

He is now wide awake - it's 1 a.m - and I've gently massaged his legs, changed his nightwear for the 3rd time - was damp with sweat - and plumped up the pillows.

Made Stephen some food and a warm drink but he asked for a thimbleful of Polish cherry vodka to warm his tum before he settles down again. Doc says there's nothing to lose by having the odd glass of wine or whatever at this stage if it gives Stephen some comfort, so I brought him a liqueur glass half full of Wisniowka, which he thoroughly enjoyed.

The district nurse is calling here tomorrow morning to keep an eye on Stephen, and I shall be very glad indeed to see the oedema nurse who is coming to treat his legs - and show me what to do.

The Outreach nurse rang this morning to see if I needed some 'respite' - i.e. go shopping whilst a nurse sits with Stephen. This could prove a valuable aid and I shall take advantage of every kind of help available when I need it, 'cos I'm slowly getting v tired.

Swollen legs . . . and panic . . .

Stephen panicked last night - the first time since he was taken ill. He is usually very positive, but last night his legs were playing him up - felt heavy and tight, and were weeping in places. They had swelled up considerably during the day in spite of frusemide (water tablets) - elastic stockings, massage and having his legs well supported above body level.

He cannot wear shoes and resorts to large old-fashioned slippers with felcro fastenings, as his feet are swollen out of all recognition.

Stephen shouted and raged against the illness for half the night - which I have now learned to ignore. I feel dreadfully sorry for him but realise he needs an outlet to get rid of the angst and bitterness. It' s difficult at times, but am determined not to play the martyr, and aim to be as loving and helpful as possible, given the cirumstances.

I rang the 'oedema' nurse at the hospice this morning and she will be in touch this afternoon.

I am hoping she will show me what to do as I don't think my massage techniques are helping the problem. I'm a bit 'rough' - which is OK for breadmaking - kneading dough - but not appropriate for a patient with very tender swollen legs.

Home from the Hospice . . .

Stephen wanted to come home so I collected him from the hospice late this afternoon - since when he slept, but woke at 9 o clock wanting sponge pudding and custard, which I duly made for him. Luckily I had made a big welcome home marmalade cake, using some of the marmalade I made on Sunday. Warmed it up and made some custard - so it was no big deal. He enjoyed it and ate the lot!

He's tucked up in bed which I made extra comfortable by putting 2 duvets on top of the mattress. He is getting very thin and bony - so the extra cushioning will hopefully prevent bed sores developing. Tight elastic stockings to help reduce the swelling in his legs are worn during the day, and his legs have to be massaged (upwards) every morning.

Stephen was measured for a stairlift this morning - which should make life a bit easier as he has great difficulty crawling up the stairs and is determined not to have a bed downstairs. Feels that is below his dignity and the last straw.

I feel tired myself after running around all evening seeing to things - making sure he is comfortable. The doctor says Stephen can be admitted to the hospice at any time - but Stephen feels he wants to spend time at home - which I understand - but just hope my energy holds out. There is only me here to see to everything, whereas there were helpers, cleaners, nurses, doctors seeing to all his needs in the hospice, and alas I am no longer a 'Spring Chicken' but more like an 'Old Boiler!'

Hospice and things . . .

Stephen is still in the Hospice, which has done him a power of good - allowing him to have a complete rest and enable me to have some free time to see my family in Scotland and catch up with housework and such joys.

The Hospice is a marvellous place and Stephen is being looked after by a tremendous staff of doctors, nurses and helpers. The food is good and they have Sky so he can watch sports whenever the mood takes him and he feels well enough to concentrate. Stephen's legs are very swollen - are massaged daily by the 'oedema' nurse and he has to wear elastic stockings during the day in an attempt to reduce/move the fluid that has collected in his legs.

I don't think about quilting nowadays, but Patsy Thompson (who works in a hospice in the States) did spring to mind.

Yes, Patsy, it is a wonderful place and a tremendous help to both Stephen and myself.

Stephen now says how much he regrets having smoked heavily over the years and drunk more than his fair share of alcohol. Had he realised the amount of damage he was doing to himself, plus the pain and discomfort he would suffer, says he would have kicked the ghastly habits into touch years ago.

I spent 2 very distressing days in Edinburgh, with my grandson who is still in hospital where he will probably remain for some considerable time. He is not at all well - and I felt so sad and helpless about everything that is happening around me that I sat in the train and cried all the way from Edinburgh to Lockerbie, at which point I pulled myself together and had a cup of tea.

Stephen is going into the Hospice on Tuesday for a few days while I go north to see my youngest grandson who is in hospital and has asked to see me.

Meanwhile here are a few quilts I've made over the years - to show I've not completely lost interest. Would quilt them much more extensively nowadays - especially the Square Dance.

Have been sketching some original designs for a few quilts (whilst I sit with Stephen) that I eventually hope to show. I'm pleased with the result. Need to get the colours right and start stitching. That is, if I ever have time or inclination to sew again.

The quilts shown above are:

English Patchwork over papers - "Breakdown" - Silks, cottons, on silk organza layers.

Double wedding ring - "Marriage" (contains my original wedding ring). Some gold lamé and cottons. Hand quilted using gold thread.

Tessellated flowers - Square Dance or "Hot Flush." Mainly cottons - machine quilted.

Grey strip patchwork - "Depression". Cottons - hand quilted using red thread.

Stephen admitted to hospital . . .

Stephen admitted to hospital yesterday afternoon with jaundice and an increasingly swollen abdomen and legs. Blood tests taken on Tuesday evening revealed alarming high readings and suggested a blockage in his liver or/and bile duct. Inserting a 'stent' was suggested to alleviate the jaundice and terrible itching that accompanied it. He is NOT well, and I was advised to call the family. This afternoon I was informed that an operation would not be advisable given Stephen's advanced condition so I brought him home.

Am worried about Stephen. He has stopped eating. Has no appetite - food is tasteless - takes all his time to drink the high energy liquids that have been prescribed by the hospital. At my wits end cooking food that I hope will temp him to eat - to no avail. Stephen managed to drink half a bowl of broth my neighbour kindly made for him today - but would eat nothing else. M makes the best broth in the world for which I'm grateful. Stephen has no energy - everything is an effort and he is getting thinner by the day. His legs are thin and I can feel his shoulder bones sticking out. He was such a strong, powerful man and it's distressing to see him virtually shrink before my eyes. I had a big weep this evening and am so fearful for the future.

A very quiet birthday morning was spent in front of a big log fire, drinking coffee and reading the papers. Stephen was in good spirits which was as good a birthday present as any.

My brother David, sister Sue and her partner Bob, called to see us in the afternoon which was much appreciated and we enjoyed their company. Stayed for afternoon tea as I had made some cakes. A very nice moist Victorian Fruit Cake, a large Double Ginger Cake, and some Fig and Prune Tea bread spread liberally with butter. Figs and Prunes sound ominous - but I made the (laxative) tea bread especially for Stephen and, as happened, it turned out to be bloomin' delicious, so everyone wanted a slice - or two. Moist and fruity.

Stephen became very weary by five o clock - as you can see from the above photo - and was not at all well this evening. I am worried as his colour is not good and his eyes are sunken.

The Outreach Team from the Hospice are calling to see him in the morning - to make sure he is alright. Let's hope they can do something to make him feel better.

Feel very apprehensive about what 2010 may have in store for us.

Stephen is not at all well tonight and has slept for most of the afternoon and evening. Is in bed with rigors and heavy sweating.

I shall contact the nurse first thing tomorrow morning.

We are very fortunate to have the support of the Outreach team at our local Hospice - Cancercare - District Nurses - a wonderful Oncologist and a great Pain Management Team at the Infirmary - plus our local GP and surgery nurse. These fantastic people are helping to prolong Stephen's life and keep him as comfortable as is humanly possible.

I am so grateful for their help and encouragement at this very difficult time.

I spoke too soon on Saturday.

Stephen was fine until tea-time when he suddenly went into a decline - and spent the whole of Sunday in bed. He got up this morning but has been poorly all day and sat huddled in front of the fire this afternoon and evening. Doesn't want to eat - feels ill -has difficulty going to the lavatory - his abdomen is swollen and hard but won't allow me to call the doctor or take him to the hospital or hospice. Gets very angry when I mention it. He saw the oncologist on Friday and is waiting for the results of a blood test and an appointment for yet another MRI scan and a report from the bowel surgeon in Manchester. He may need an op.

I talked to the District Nurse this afternoon and she made some suggestions and is calling to see Stephen on Wednesday afternoon to see how he is faring.

Outsiders remark how well he looks - considering what he's got - and of course he puts on a brave face. Inside the house it's a completely different matter.

It is very distressing.

I had to go to the hospital this morning for a barium meal. Much better and far less traumatic than having an endoscopy I can tell you.

Between us, Stephen and me are a right old pair of crocks. Almost ready for the knackers yard methinks!

LATEST UPDATE ON STEPHEN . . .

Have not posted any details about Stephen for a while as things were very dicey at times, but for those of you who are interested and have been following his progress, I will now bring you up to date.

Prof B at the Hospice arranged for him to see the Pain Management team at a local hospital where Stephen underwent a spinal block in an attempt to stop the excruciating pain.

I'm glad to report that it worked - and Stephen is now free from pain. He still has 'upsy downsy' days when he seems 'reasonably' fine one day but confined to his bed on other days with exhaustion, no appetite, and deep sweats.

His appetite is poor, as I mentioned, so I try to coax him to eat - serving tiny portions of very tasty food as his taste buds have changed - probably affected by the increased doses of morphine. High energy drinks have been prescribed which 'taste awful' says Stephen - but mixed with lemonade are 'just about palatable.' However, these drinks keep him going during the non-eating days.

He takes steroids (magic pills) when he is at a very low ebb as they give him energy, decrease the sweats, and increase his appetite, but have to be taken with discretion.

The downside is they make him very argumentative!!!

Stephen's hair is returning since the chemo (which didn't work)and he feels 'fairly human' once more, but is losing weight at a rate of knots (now weighs less than me) which is to be expected given his decreased appetite.

Stephen knows he is on 'the slippy slope' but is making the best of the good days, of which today is one. It's a lovely day. The sun is shining. He feels 'good' he says and fancies scrambled eggs!

So we are - as they say - 'making hay whilst the sun shineth . . . . .'

Eighteen wonderful ladies raised £8,000 ($13,000+) for The Christie Hospital, which specializes in cancer treatments and is known worldwide.

Hilary and the girls (plus one man) made The Singing Garden Quilt - from a BOM created by me and published by Popular Patchwork magazine earlier this year. The group are to be congratulated for a superb effort!

I was invited to draw the winning ticket at their Quilt Show on Saturday but was unable to do so due to the dreaded Swine Flu plus looking after Stephen who is very ill.

It is an understatement to say how disappointed I was at not being able to attend the ceremony - and missed a lovely lunch to boot.

Luckily, Katy - web editor from popularpatchwork.com - rose to the occasion and did the honours in my place. I understand a piece of the special Singing Garden Cake (see above) is winging it's way to me by Royal Mail. It's a super cake isn't it - and what a good idea!

The magazine will be featuring pictures of Singing Garden Quilts made by subscribers - in next month's edition.

Stephen is not well and we have been to and from the Hospice and the hospital these past few weeks. He is receiving therapies which help him somewhat - but the pain in his back is becoming unbearable. Drugs have been increased but the morphine doesn't seem to touch the pain - just makes him dopey. He has been referred to a Pain Management consultant at the hospital and is to have a spinal block - i.e. injection into his spine - next Friday - in a desperate attempt to give him some respite. This will require anaesthetic and overnight stay in hospital.

The nights are bad and I feel helpless not knowing what to do. At the end of the day - in spite of help from the Hospice, local hospital and Macmillan/District nurses - it's still a case of dealing with things yourselves.

Not only does Patsy have a lovely face and reassuring voice - which Stephen finds restful and appealing, but her skill at free motion quilting is a triumph.

Patsy helps at a Hospice in the USA which makes her presence in our sitting room doubly welcome at this sad time.

The Hospice . . .

After two very painful days and nights, Stephen agreed that outside help is needed and finally decided that the local Hospice is the answer at this stage of his illness - now that all treatment has ceased - and not the hospital with admittance to an understaffed geriatric ward - the main point of a hospice being pain relief and palliative care - with emphasis on 'care.'

After talking to the District Nurse, and making a few phone calls, it was arranged for Stephen and myself to see the Professor in charge of the hospice early this morning.

Professor B took detailed notes, gave Stephen a physical examination - asked oncologist at hospital for copies of Stephen's medical records, including results of latest CT / MRI scans, and arranged to see him again in 2 weeks. He doubled the drugs - arranged for a Macmillan nurse to call in 3 days to see if the increased drugs have deadened the pain as opposed to merely making him drowsy - and is considering a spinal block - done under anaesthetic - if the new drug regime does not work.

We both felt a great sense of relief and Stephen feels he is in good hands - with people who care and know what they're doing - and understand his anxieties.

The hospice is situated on the outskirts of town in lovely surroundings - trees and flowers abound everywhere. There is a sense of calm within the building and they have some very pretty curtaining in the lounge areas, which would make a jolly nice quilt. Talking of which, I may use one of my Singing Garden quilts as a raffle prize with proceeds to the hospice as a thankyou for the help they are giving Stephen and myself. Will give me an incentive to get it layered and quilted.

Oh dear . . .

We have another appointment at the hospice tomorrow morning - with the complementary therapy team - to see if massage and reflexology will benefit Stephen and help him to relax.

They also provide residential and day care which provides respite for both patient and carer.

I feel a load has been lifted from my shoulders - by the sheer fact I will receive support in helping Stephen to deal with this dreadful disease - and that he can now enjoy what is left of his life without the excruciating pain that has devastated him these past weeks.

Ghastly night . . .

Yesterday and last night was one of the worst yet. Stephen was in severe pain in his back for most of the day - not even the morphine could touch it.

Took to his bed in late afternoon - by evening was in a dreadful state - but of course, being a weekend, nobody was available - it's all ansaphones.

A lesson to be learned here - don't fall ill over a weekend!

I massaged his back with Ibuprofen Gel which does give him a bit of relief - and he took slow-release morphine plus a good dose of liquid morphine to alleviate the pain. I plumped him up with feather cushions and a V shaped cushion in an attempt to get him into a comfortable position as he felt worse lying flat. Ran up and downstairs for remainder of evening until I fell into bed at midnight. Got up through the night to keep an eye on him. Exhausted.

However, Stephen feels much better this morning. Insisted on getting up and dressed for breakfast - but is staggering a bit and holding on to bannisters and furniture.

We'll have to see what the day brings.

Have postponed my endoscopy for the present time as I seem able to control the symptoms with diet and yoga breathing plus am convinced the acid reflux is triggered by anxiety and stress. I talked to a nurse in the endoscopy department yesterday who agreed that now is not the time to put myself under extra stress, but can have one if symptoms don't improve.

So that's a relief.

Julie - many thanks for your email. Have noted your endoscopy experiences - with and without sedation. Yes, will take your advice and go down the sedation road. Thankyou for that.

Oncologist's report . .

Stephen had a bad night. I gently massaged his back and legs with Ibuprofen Gel for half an hour in a desperate attempt to relieve the pain. He had a dose of morphine and then, thankfully, fell asleep.

It was with some trepidation that we drove to the hospital this morning to receive the results of his latest CT scan taken 10 days ago. I was particularly nervous as I thought his skin had taken on a yellow tinge earlier in the week.

Our fears were justified as we were told the tumours in his liver had grown considerably in spite of chemo. He is due to have a last bout of chemo next Tuesday but this has now been cancelled.

Was told that we can survive on a very small part of our liver (if that makes sense) - which was encouraging. It's now a waiting game.

We go to the Hospice next Wednesday for complementary therapy which I hope will help to control Stephen's pain.

Meanwhile I received a letter from the hospital telling me all about the endoscopy which I am to have (endure) next Saturday - 26th. After reading the small print - am of a mind to forego the experience. A bag of nerves as it is and, having had an xray which should reveal any abnormalities, can't see the need for invasive action which could affect me for a while.

Have put myself on a strict regime of eating small meals - slowly. Sitting up straight whilst eating. Walking about for 20 minutes after every meal.

Following a diet of no alcohol/coffee - no dairy foods (fats) - no chocolate - and sticking to fruit such as bananas and apples (no citrus fruits/juices). Can eat goat's cheese and goat's butter (very nice) and Feta cheese.

Bought soya milk today - and will give it a whirl.

Also - and think this is The Cure - sipping warm drinks of "Slippery Elm" plus honey three times a day. De-lish!

This photo was taken over a month ago - when Stephen was beginning to lose his hair and beard - resembled a pirate! Looked good, and seemed to be coping really well after first session of latest chemo, but is sadly now unrecognisable.

His appearance changed dramatically 2 weeks ago and things have not been easy with most of my time taken up trying to keep him comfortable and as happy as is humanly possible, given the circumstances.

He is now having difficulty in climbing the stairs and walking has become a problem. Stephen has reacted very badly to this last two sessions of chemo (has final (4th) session next week) - which seems to have weakened him and he looks yellow this morning. His hair and beard have gone walk about and his face is badly swollen with steroids. Would be unfair to post a picture of him in his present unrecognisable state.

Slow-release morphine has been prescribed during the day and a separate dose of morphine is given at night to help Stephen sleep.

Rang the Hospice this morning and asked for help with therapies to make him feel better and help him relax - reflexology and massage for example - plus some restorative yoga for myself.

Saw Upper GI consultant yesterday - had xray and am to have an endoscopy on Saturday 26th September (which I understand is akin to having a hosepipe thrust down your throat.)

A weekend experience I could do without.

On a lighter note - my grand-daughter Polly, and her (coxless pair) team-mate Jen won gold medals at the European Championships in Poland 2 weeks ago. Will post a pic of them, later.

Polly is the blonde - 6'1" - and Jen, (ex Cambridge Blue - now studying medicine at Edinburgh with Polly) is a magnificent 6' 3"! The girls look marvellous together - like tall beautiful trees.

I am so proud and their success brought a badly needed bit of sunshine into our lives . .

I'm very sorry and extremely disappointed that the publication of my 2010 BOM Beginners Heirloom Sampler for the magazine has had to be postponed indefinitely but, as I'm sure you can appreciate, present circumstances make it impossible to give time to anything other than Stephen's needs for the foreseeable future.

Swollen feet and legs . . .

Stephen is having his second session of chemo later this morning, but his feet and legs have started to swell over the past couple of days so we have made an appointment to see the GP before we set off for the oncology department at the hospital.

I looked up the symptoms on the internet and it appears the swelling may be related to his liver problems. The increased morphine and steroid intake this past week may also be responsible.

I too am seeing the GP. Have developed a very sore throat/trachea over the past 3 weeks, which may or may not be due to stress - but it needs seeing to as I am finding it very painful to speak.

We are fast becoming a pair of old crocks!!

Saw the oncologist this morning after spending 3 very troublesome weeks during which time Stephen has suffered severe pain, sleepless nights, and been anxiously awaiting results of MRI and CT scans taken 10 days ago.

Good news is that the pain in his back is not due to cancer but old damage to his spine - and they might be able to operate to relieve some of the pressure and pain.

Good news too re lymphomas in his stomach which have shrunk since his last bout of chemo.

The bad news is that tumours in both bowel and liver have grown by 2cms since end of April.

Stephen is beginning to lose his hair - coming out in handfuls, so I bought him a black bandana online, which actually suits him (and his pirate personality).

So we plod on. . . . Stephen has now been prescribed slow-release morphine and steroids each day - with extra morphine to take at night should the pain increase. This should ensure a pain-free day but there is a down-side we're told, as steroids can sometimes alter behaviour with patients becoming irritable and aggressive in some cases. I hope this will not be the scenario with Stephen as life is difficult enough as it is.

Patchwork and quilting have had to take a back seat. Reluctantly cancelled trips to Birmingham and Harrogate Shows and not running any P & Q workshops in the foreseeable future.

Life is on hold - with all my attention given to securing Stephen's comfort.

All the money in the world cannot change this situation, so I'm not buying any more lottery tickets!

Devastating news . . .

A scan on Friday has revealed enlargement of the tumours in Stephen's liver. This is devastating news as he seemed to be doing so well on the steroids.

He has, however, developed excruciating pain in his back which the oncologist fears may be related to his condition and has arranged a bone scan.

Stephen has been in terrible pain these past 2 weeks which only morphine seems to deaden. Last night he had to resort to a double dose before he could manage to sleep. Before that we were up half the night. The morphine is still in his system so he feels a bit better this morning.

Whilst most are of the opinion that Stephen should now leave well enough alone and continue with palliative care - he has insisted on further treatment with chemo starting next Tuesday.

This particular chemo is aggressive with side effects of hair loss, diarrhoea, life threatening infection, and death - according to the doctor's written comments on the certificate Stephen has had to sign.

"I am not going to just sit and wait to die," he said. "I'm going to take a chance on the chemo extending my life."

I am worried stiff, and wonder what choice I would make given the same situation.

Am surrounded by artists. Stephen (who used to teach art) and brother David who has recently taken up oil painting as a retirement hobby (and showing talent), plus brother-in-law Bob who is a professional artist! My sister is a brilliant couturier knitter - using fabulous designs and colours.

It's humbling - tho' I guess some quiltmakers are artistic. Ahem!

From whom my grandchildren inherited a sports tendency is a mystery - a throwback perhaps - as my parents and brother loathed all forms of sport and I'm not into it, having had rheumatic fever in my teens which knackered me as far as sport was concerned - tho' I was previously successful in long jump - flat racing and javelin throwing before RH struck.

It's funny how the old gene pool works isn't it?

Most of the family are musical or artistic - my daughters being excellent singers, yet my son and the grandchildren are mostly into sports.

The boys into rugby, skiing, sailing and girls into sailing and rowing. A good way of keeping them on the straight and narrow I guess, especially testosterone-fuelled teenagers!

Have just noticed a visitor from Vashon Island. I have relatives on Vashon living on 98th Street South - near the Fauntleroy ferry. Met some talented ladies who belonged to a quilting group on Vashon some years ago. They were the friendliest folk - and made some spectacular quilts.

It's a wonderful place to live and my regret is that I didn't stay there.

Full of blossom - and not a bee in sight this year. Where have they gone? Worrying!

Received a lovely surprise today when my son, daughter-in-law, and grand-daughter arrived unexpectedly from the Highlands of Scotland to see how we are coping. Don't get to see them as often nowadays as it is too far for Stephen to travel, so the visit was doubly welcome.

Megan is absolutely thrilled to be chosen as Head Girl this year. She's lovely - is a proficient sailor - and hopes to receive her trainers certificate this week so she can teach sailing, alongside her brother Sam, on Loch Morlich near their home. I am thrilled about my grandchildren - all 10 of them - and I must congratulate my three children and their spouses for being such super and sensible parents who support and encourage their children to the nth degree.

Got a lot of catching up to do . . . after a stressful couple of weeks . . . . tho' I'm glad to say that Stephen is now coping very well on steroids (magic pills) and even went fishing for a few hours with my brother David yesterday. David has taken up a new hobby - painting - and this is his first attempt, using oils. Move over Rembrandt is all I can say!!!

MP's Expenses - Making a Mockery . . . .

Did you read Saturday's Daily Telegraph to check your MP's expenses? I did, though Telegraph is not my usual paper. You may be in for a surprise. Under the heading "Making a mockery - The rest of the Mockers" our 2 local MP's were among the highest claimants in the country.

Geraldine Smith, for example, was 37th out of 645 MP's in claiming a total of £166,097 expenses in 2007/8 and claimed the maximum £400 most months for food, whilst Ben Wallace was top claimant out of all MP's for Additional Costs Allowance but no claim for his food.

These figures do not include generous salaries of £64,766 per annum.

For a 12 month period in 2007/8 Geraldine Smith was in receipt of a hefty £230,863 whilst Ben Wallace received £239,789. Not bad, eh?
